Is there a waiting period to claim unemployment benefits after getting the Green Card? Can a person claim UB in couple of months after getting the green card?

I am going to be let go next month. I got the GC last month.

Thanks!!!

There is no waiting period for applying for unemployment benefits after getting GC and as per law you are eligible for it. However I would not apply at least for the first few months as it may cause problems during naturalization.

No there is no waiting period and since your company paid into then System contributes to cover your unemployment you are entitled to it and you should apply right away or you lose your rights. What the next poster was referring to in possibly becoming a problem during naturalization has to do with you becoming a Public Charge when in reality your sponsor committed to assist you financially for the next 10 years. However, I'm pretty sure that collecting unemployment doesn't constitute ground for becoming a public charge. Remember that you and your Employer paid for your unemployment. On the other hand if you were to end up collecting SS benefits, Medicaid, housing support, and food stamps, that would qualify you a public charge.

I need some guidance on this folks. I am in a similar situation. I lost my job last month and most likely my GC will be approved this month. Could anyone of you be able to provide any inputs on how can I claim unemployment benefits.
As said, my sponsor does not assist me financially anymore as he did not even pay my health insurance. Claiming unemployment benefits would qualify me for a public charge? if that the case, any repercussions that I might have to take care of? please advise.
Thank you.

Hi camguy,
Sorry about what happened to you and I wouldn't worry about if claiming unemployment benefits may raise red flags during naturalization for becoming a public charge. As a resident you have the right to claim unemployment and since in reality it was being paid for by your employer, you're not taking anything away from the Gov't.

However, I am not sure you'll be eligible to apply for unemployment, at least not until your green card is approved. One of the first things they ask you during the application is if you are a legal permanent resident and ask you to submit a copy of your green card or passport with a visa or stamp stating you're eligible to work, which currently you're not. You may miss out getting paid for the next few weeks, but definitely apply online or call them as soon as you get your green card approved.

Good luck!
